In recent years, the Russian media has published articles on the Sumgayit events and the Khojaly genocide, which expose Armenia’s fabricated lies. Armenians, who have always tried to use the Russian media against Azerbaijan, have themselves been targeted by the same media today. So what are the reasons for this, and what does the Russian media's objective approach to the Sumgayit events and the Khojaly genocide mean?
Since 2010 we have witnessed a different development in Russia-Azerbaijan relations, Chairman of the Baku Club of Political Scientists Zaur Mammadov told the Kaspi newspaper. "The main reason for this is that the Azerbaijani government, as in all directions, pursues a rational policy in the interest of both sides, which seeks to convince Moscow to not only support Armenia in the South Caucasus. The relationship between the two country’s leaders has also led to the change and development of relations between Russia and Azerbaijan. Russia, the United States, and a number of western countries have pursued their policy in the South Caucasus by using the Armenian issue, and their goal was to use the Armenian card to break up the region and strengthen their influence. With this in mind, official Baku was able to change the viewpoint of the great powers towards the South Caucasus. If in the 90s and early 2000s we could clearly see that many countries, including France and Russia, supported Armenia, now Russia's separate media experts, parliament and certain geopolitical figures are closer to Azerbaijan,” he said.
Mammadov said that there is no objectivity in politics. "But in the case of the Sumgayit events, the Khojaly genocide and the realities in the South Caucasus, the truth is on the Azerbaijani side. International law, history is on Baku’s side. Unlike Armenia, Azerbaijan does not create sparks in the region, but rather is a guarantee of stability. Azerbaijan and Russia have recently been linked to successful regional economic projects. Among these projects, we can name the North-South transport corridor. There is also energy cooperation between the two countries. We do not deny that there are enough Armenians in the Russian media and some state structures today, whose main goal is to undermine Russia-Azerbaijan relations, to engage in provocations and to pursue anti-Azerbaijan and anti-Turkic policies. But as a result of Azerbaijan’s efforts, there is also an Azerbaijani intellectual and economic elite in Russia. Previouisly if we had encountered Azerbaijanis very rarely in Russian media and in some political institutions, today their numbers are increasing,” he added.
Political scientist Elshad Mirbashir said that behind the Russian media’s, as well as the world media’s objective assessment of the provocations carried out against Azerbaijan, stands the diplomatic achievements of our country and the strengthening of its positions in the information warfare. "Because for many years, Azerbaijan has provided strong arguments in regard to the Khojaly massacre and atrocious crimes and vandalism committed by Armenia. Of course, it is worth noting the other side of the issue. This also indicates that Azerbaijan is increasing its strength and we can observe it in all directions. From this point of view, we are witnessing a more objective and sensitive approach towards Azerbaijan. The objective views in Russia regarding the Khojaly genocide and Sumgayit events on February 28-29, 1988 are due to irrefutable evidence. I would like to reiterate that this is the result of consistent, decisive policies and activities implemented by the Azerbaijani side,” he said.
Mirbashir stressed that President Ilham Aliyev delivers the rightful position of our country from all respectable platforms. "At the same time, Ilham Aliyev represents a powerful state. All these factors come together to make the rightful voice of Azerbaijan heard and a fair and objective position towards our country is demonstrated. Of course, the main characteristic of our modern era is that no matter how right you are, if you are weak, your voice will not be heard and your rights will not be recognized. But now it is one of the most powerful and strong periods in the history of Azerbaijan. Both in regard to the Khojaly genocide and the provocations carried out in Sumgayit and in general, in regard to the Armenia-Azerbaijan, Nagorno-Karabakh conflict Azerbaijan’s rightful position is recognized all around the world. It is known that Armenia is an aggressive and destructive state. Under the influence of the above-mentioned factors, there is an objective position towards Azerbaijan, whether it be in the media in Russia or in the media of other countries around the world,” he said.
