The most common type of disease in Azerbaijan is respiratory diseases, followed by digestive system diseases. In the past, respiratory illnesses were also first among illnesses. The second most common type of disease among the population is various infectious and parasitic diseases. In 2005, the total number of registered patients in the country was 1,503,824. Of them, 677,123 patients suffered from respiratory illnesses. In that same year, 129,299 people were diagnosed with various infectious and parasitic diseases, 117,345 patients with circulatory system diseases, and 107,162 people with diseases of the digestive system. In the following years, alongside the increase in the number of registered patients across the country, there was also an increase in the number of people suffering from digestive and circulatory system illnesses. As a result of this increase, the number of registered cases of the digestive system illnesses became the second most common type of disease group among the population. The number of people suffering from various infectious and parasitic diseases was the fourth most common type of disease group after circulatory system diseases. In 2015, the number of patients registered in the country was 1,824,086, of which 752,669 were registered as patients of respiratory diseases, 156,197 as patients of the digestive system diseases, 134,225 as patients of the circulatory system diseases, and 114,995 as patients of various infectious and parasitic diseases. This tendency was also observed in the following years. Of the 1,875,652 patients registered in the country in 2017, 735,922 suffered from respiratory system diseases, 160,801 patients from digestive tract diseases, 143,182 patients from circulatory disorders, and 124,457 from various infectious and parasitic diseases. And of the 1,895,897 patients registered in the country in 2018, 762,809 were diagnosed with respiratory diseases, 164,531 with digestive system diseases, 144 719 with diseases of the circulatory system, and 119,954 with various infectious and parasitic diseases.

What are the main causes of these widespread diseases in our country? What steps should be taken in order to prevent them, and what should people pay attention to?

According to Pulmonologist Asad Baidullayev, the biggest cause of respiratory illnesses is smoking. "The spread of diseases between men and women also varies. For example, breast cancer is more common among women, whereas in men it is lung cancer. As a whole, as we speak about the spread of respiratory diseases, we must first emphasize the change in climate, ecological imbalance, and the use of cigarettes. Allergic asthma is one of the most common type of respiratory system diseases. Some of the things we use can cause an allergic reaction without us being aware. For example, if you pay attention, you will see that there are a lot of decorative plants being imported in to the city which also often cause various allergic diseases in the respiratory system. Yet again, smoking is the biggest cause of respiratory diseases. According to our recent observations, smoking has become widespread among women and children also. Therefore, the prevalence of respiratory diseases has become inevitable. Smoking can cause harm not only to the lungs of the smokers but also to the people around them. Although these people do not smoke themselves, they breathe in the smoke to their respiratory tract. I should note that smokers are 15 times more likely to be diagnosed with lung cancer than the average person,” the pulmonologist said.

The doctor also noted that awareness plays a major role in preventing diseases. "It would be better if people were constantly informed and educated on the dangers of smoking. As a doctor, I fulfill my responsibility by having conversations with my patients during appointments, and sharing educational information on social networks. Of course, a lot of measures have been taken in recent years at the state level to stop smoking. Our main goal is to ban smoking in public places. True, some decisions have been made in this area but I think we need to make these decisions even tougher,” he added.

Gastrologist Elnara Aliyeva said that digestive system disorders are caused by poor nutrition and passive lifestyles. "In recent times, people are consuming too much ready-made foods and drinks that have additives. Even at the age of two, children are given different colored beverages. Previously, children were given home-made compotes that have now been replaced by juice. I always advise that children only drink water. They should never be given drinks with a high sugar content. Those who are fed these unhealthy foods early on, often face problems with their digestive process when they are adults. If we were to conduct a survey on nutrition in the city, most people would admit that they have poor nutrition. It is important to stay away and consume less "fast food”. Even if we do eat "fast food,” we need to make sure that it contains a small amount of colored sauce. If you pay attention to our young adults, they have thin arms and legs, but there is fat in their abdomen area. This is due to overnight eating. When the body wants to relax and sleep in the evening, you eat, and it doesn't have the power to digest what you eat. This creates a harmful fat storage in the body. In addition, an inactive lifestyle can cause our digestive organs to function poorly and can lead to various diseases. Walking a lot throughout the day is a must. Even drivers should park their cars at least one stop from their destination and walk rest of the way. If you eat properly and are physically transitioning to an active lifestyle, you can solve many problems with your digestive system,” she said.
