Why don’t some people believe in the coronavirus?

"This is the second emergency medical responder who has sacrificed his life in the fight against the coronavirus. How many more doctors have to die to make people believe that the coronavirus is real. Everyone must fight this virus...” posted a doctor on his social media account. Undoubtedly, the doctors' fight against coronavirus is more difficult than ours. Because in this struggle, they lose their patients and colleagues. But some do not want to understand the danger of the virus because they do not see it. Some people even consider this threat as a game to scare people. So why don't we believe that there is a virus?

Speaking on Ictimai Television about those who do not believe in the coronavirus, Head of the working group on infectious diseases of the Management Union of Medical Territorial Unit (TABIB) Vasif Aliyev said that not only in our country but all over the world, the number of people who do not believe in the coronavirus is higher than those who do. "Everyone says that they did not see a close relative or neighbor catch COVID-19. Some people are treated for coronavirus, but do not tell their relatives,” Aliyev said.

The TABIB official noted that this is also due to our mentality. "As if it is a shame to be infected with the coronavirus. Coronavirus is an infection of the upper respiratory tract, which may later cause pneumonia. Everyone is at risk and no one is insured against the disease. Probably people will believe it more after someone around them is infected. But then it will be too late. This is a problem not only in Azerbaijan but also all over the world. We see the condition of people infected with the coronavirus. Of course, more people are in mild condition. However, the number of people in moderate and severe conditions is also high. It can benefit us to believe it now," he added.

According to MP Azer Badamov, the measures taken prevented the spread of the virus. "But this does not mean that there is no virus. The Azerbaijani state’s serious and determined struggle against the coronavirus has prevented the spread of the disease in our country. Today, Azerbaijani citizens do not feel the serious threat posed by the coronavirus because the preventative measures are strong enough. But this does not mean that there is no such virus. The statistics of those infected with the virus every day alone proves it once again. In recent days, the indicators are growing again. During the first outbreak of the virus, the country enforced a strict quarantine regime. As a result of these steps, our mortality and infection rates are many times lower than in other countries. Starting this month, the quarantine regime has been eased, which has created a sense of freedom in people. As a result, everyone thinks that the coronavirus does not exist at all. As if it serves the interests of some people, which is not the case. Therefore, people should take precautions. It is enough to give a simple example. While a strict quarantine regime was imposed in Azerbaijan, the virus was ignored in neighboring Dagestan. Today, the information coming from there is heartbreaking. The number of infected people is quite high in the central city and regions of Dagestan. The main thing is to take the necessary steps in time. We can’t wait until the spread of the virus expands. Every citizen must understand his responsibility. We must try to reduce the depth of the virus and the problems it causes. Unfortunately, some irresponsible citizens do not follow the necessary rules. Thus, declining dynamics is showing growth again. Of course, if the growth rate continues to grow, the quarantine regime may be tightened again,” Badamov said.

Medical expert Shahla Balayeva noted that people should not treat the coronavirus lightly. "People must accept the fact that there is a virus. It is gratifying that timely steps have been taken to combat the coronavirus. Therefore, the number of people infected with the virus in Azerbaijan was very small. Also, contact with other patients was reduced to zero as infected patients were treated in quarantine, which has led our people to believe that there is no coronavirus and that it's just a tool to scare people. If these people want to see if there is a virus, they can visit patients in hospitals. Hundreds of coronavirus patients have been hospitalized. Doctors are constantly working hard, risking their lives. This has been said and written many times. Educated people and those who have a certain outlook on life understand that this issue should not be taken lightly because a vaccine has not yet been found. The media also bear a heavy burden in this regard. They should play a more active role in raising awareness in the public because people don’t believe what they don't see. Ignorance is the biggest disease. No one can deny the existence of this virus. Those infected with the virus are ashamed to admit it. There is no need to be embarrassed because the coronavirus is no different from the common flu,” she said.
